A Guide to Lisbon’s Most Stunning Views

Magnificently sited on seven hills running down to the grand Tagus River, Lisbon invites anyone to pause and contemplate the view.

At the top of each hill, you'll find strategically-placed viewpoints, where locals and visitors and enjoy the view, often with a drink in hand. These viewpoints, called miradouros in Portuguese, are an essential part of the Lisbon experience. With more than thirty scattered across the city, we’ve selected some of the best spots for you to enjoy truly breathtaking views.

Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara

Located on the hill directly across from São Jorge castle, this miradouro allows you to gaze down all of Lisbon downtown towards the waterfront.

Miradouro das Portas do Sol

Not very far from the castle (6-minute walk), this terrace gets you a postcard-like view of the city. It overlooks the domes and rooftops of the typical neighbourhood of Alfama and the Tagus river.

Miradouro de Santa Luzia

Right next to Miradouro das Portas do Sol is this incredibly charming terrace. It has a very similar view over the tiled roofs of Alfama and the Tejo Estuary.

Miradouro da Graça

With shaded sitting and drinks kiosks, this is one of Lisbon’s meeting points, mixing both locals and tourists. It offers some of the best views of the castle.

Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

The highest point of the city offers one of the best views, that’s no doubt. It has a delightful and romantic setting and an amazing view over the castle and almost the entire city.

Miradouro do Arco da Rua Augusta

Overlooks the calm Tagus river under a clear blue sky.Yes, you can actually go to the top of the famous arch and get amazing bird’s-eye views of the city centre. On one side there’s a beautiful view over Praça do Comércio and the Tagus. On the other, a view over the bustling Rua Augusta and all of downtown.

The Miradouro is open from 10h to 19h and the entrance fee is 5€.

Miradouro de Santa Catarina

One of the best viewpoints of the Tagus River, the 25 de Abril Bridge and the Cristo-Rei Statue. A popular spot for locals that come here to hang out, play music and drink beer.

Miradouro do Torel

This hilltop terrace overlooks one of the central avenues of the city (Avenida da Liberdade). It is also a pleasant garden and still remains a well kept secret.

Miradouro do Parque Eduardo VII

This viewpoint located at the northern end of the gardens of Eduardo VII Park provides a very different view over Lisbon. It looks down over the Marquês de Pombal square and the view extends from Avenida da Liberdade all the way to downtown and the Tagus River. You can enjoy a tree-lined walk down the hill from Miradouro do Parque Eduardo VII to the Rossio square.
